“Once we believe in ourselves, we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight, or any experience that reveals the human spirit.”
~e.e. cummings
You know how some things in life just don’t look that sparkly at first glance?
Yes, you’ll do them, but it may be out of love for someone else, that you’ll choose to find joy in it.
Other things in life, you’re all in.
As soon as you hear about them, your heart skips a beat and says Hell Yes and you know it’s what you want.
I believe in following those Hell Yes feelings as often and wholeheartedly as possible…and I realized this week that it’s also totally okay to do those other not quite Hell Yes things, too.
Because sometimes they turn out to be unexpectedly delightful.
While my 10 year old daughter was road tripping with my mama across the United States {they were cruising for 22 days!}, my 6 year old and I had lots of special mama daughter time.
One thing she really wanted to do was go see a movie together. Storks was her choice.
At first, I was like, what?!? Storks. Really? My heart did not skip a beat.
But then, I was like, wait, I’m going to go to sit with my daughter, away from our home where there are always at least 18,000 things to do, for a good amount of time and just be with her?!?
And so I said, sure, let’s go see Storks.
Being the aspiring fashion designer that she is, my girl decided to wear her fancy new dress and matching sweater we’d just picked up at the thrift store, along with her light pink satin clutch.
She chose my dress and sweater and was delighted when I slipped on fancy wedges to wear along with the dress.
It’s the little things, you know.
When we arrived at the theater, we felt like royalty with the place basically to ourselves. We were two of six people watching the movie that day.
Before the movie even started, she asked if she could sit on my lap and there she stayed for the next hour and a half.
Melt my heart.
As we sat there together in the dark and the movie started playing, I was so beyond happy that it wouldn’t have mattered what came on the screen…
It was just being with my babe that lit me up, that made my heart skip a beat, that made me feel that Hell Yes feeling I so appreciate.
Because I love her, just being together was enough.
More than enough, really.
Even though I didn’t expect to have as much fun as her, I think I may have enjoyed our date even more than she did {she had the best time, by the way}.
Because I have the perspective to know how fleeting this life and these days are, I could savor that time so completely.
Holding her on my lap, arms wrapped around her waist with her hands resting on mine, her sweet little blond six year old head leaning against my shoulder.
These truly are the grand years and such magical days.
Being her mama reminds me again and again how it feels to be delighted.
And that happiness comes from choosing to appreciate and enjoy our experience…
That love is really the reason for any of it and all of it.
So, I invite you to let yourself be delighted.
Let your heart be light.
Let your life be full of unexpected delights, tender moments, and epic love.
Love + Peace,
💗 Denise
p.s. This song is one of my faves…and was part of the sweet conclusion of the movie Storks. I think you’ll dig it, too. 😉
