In the midst of a season where calendars are over-full, quiet time is diminished, and rushing seems to be the norm, I feel luxurious as I lounge and soak in the silence of stillness and peace. I remember that the essence of the holiday season is Peace and Joy, and yet often times, we succumb to the cultural habit of consuming, rushing, moving constantly without taking time to slow down, acknowledge the grace of all that is, and soak in the brilliant silence of just being.

It’s funny that even nearly 70 years ago, in the movie, Miracle on 34th Street, the commentary on the “commercialism” of Christmas resonates with our continued American habit of focusing on things and doings rather than feelings and beings. What would happen if we reached the tipping point of awakening that could shift our perspective about what really matters at Christmas? In relationships? In LIFE? What if we really truly honestly held gratitude and love and kindness and peace and joy at the heart of our purpose and made these our reason for being, our reason for celebrating? What if giving was not about purchasing tactile objects made by often under supported workers in far away countries, but instead about giving of ourselves…opening our hearts, treating others with kindness every day, being of service to one another, sharing all that we are and have?

How will our selves, our communities, our culture, our country, our world, our LIVES shift when we realign ourselves with quality rather than quantity?

What may we become when LOVE is the greatest gift to give and receive?
