As I sat with my elder daughter the other day, waiting for my row to be “dismissed” from a delightful performance of Anastasia Krupnik, I chatted with another homeschoolin’ mama about how absurd it felt to wait for dismissal.

After all, there were no lines, no throngs of people and there was plenty of space to safely leave the small theater.

When I stood to exit, I jokingly told her, “I only follow the rules that make sense.”

She agreed and mischievously commented, “Well, how subversive of you.”

And, to my surprise, I took it as a compliment.

subversive (n.): a radical supporter of political or social revolution

Yes, I am subversive.

I do believe in questioning the status quo.

I believe that it’s the revolutionary ideas that transform our reality and our future.

I believe in questioning everything…and coming to our own conclusions about the ways of the world.

I believe in a peaceful revolution toward living in harmony with ourSelves, with each other and with our great Mother.

After so many years as a student and teacher in the public education system, I realize that we NEED to subvert the rules and practices that fail to serve the higher good…this is how progress and transformation manifest.

This may mean questioning the burning of fossil fuels, the compartmentalization of homes and workspaces and student learning, the drive to standardize every individual, the pressure to conform, the belief that competition is the most natural state of humanity…we have a right and a responsibility to ponder not only the way things are, but more importantly,

IMAGINE the way LIFE COULD BE.

So, yes, in this way, I am subversive…I like challenging what is and expanding into all that could be…leading lovingly and peacefully with our hearts into an era of compassion and cooperation.

What about you? How do you march to the beat of a different drum?
