I remember the first Saturday five years ago that I rode my bike under cerulean blue skies and the warmth of the glowing sun to a lovely space amidst five noble trees near the ocean…to practice YOGA.

My dear friend, Dharma Shakti, had decided to create an opportunity for her friends to practice yoga together without the cost of studio classes. That first practice there were only a handful of us present, bowing to the sun, soaking in the air flowing across the ocean, cultivating PEACE in ourselves to share with the world.

It was from this seed of intention to GIVE, to SHARE, to BE OF SERVICE, that Dharma’s yoga movement, Yogalution, has grown. These days, when you attend Free Yoga on Saturdays at 11a on the bluffs at Ocean & Junipero in Long Beach, you will witness the power of yoga, of giving, of LOVE, as you see people from every walk of life coming together to practice yoga.

How amazing that one woman’s love and desire to give have transformed into a movement that invites hundreds of people each week to practice yoga for free. Dharma has created a community yoga practice that truly is for everyone.

And isn’t this the heart of our practice anyway? To yolk, to unite, to transcend, to give,  to love.

When I think of people who inspire me, who remind me of the power of giving, who encourage me to be my best, most loving self every day, I think of Dharma.

I give thanks for all the peace, kindness and self awareness that her LOVE and LIGHT has nurtured.

I give thanks for my inspiring friend.
